Chequer (tear-drop) plates
Steel plate with a raised tear-drop pattern that improves slip resistance. Used for surfaces subject to foot or vehicle traffic.

What chequer plates are
Chequer plate has a raised pattern on one side, usually in the shape of tear-drops — hence the common name tear-drop plate. The other side remains smooth.
The raised pattern increases friction, making the surface safer to walk on even when wet, oily or dusty. Scratches and signs of wear are also less visible on the patterned surface.
Properties
The base material is standard hot-rolled structural steel, so the plate retains good weldability and formability. The pattern is formed during rolling rather than added afterwards.
When ordering, the specified thickness is that of the base plate, excluding the height of the pattern. The overall thickness including the raised pattern is greater — allow for this when designing the supports.
The grade we supply
We supply chequer plates as standard in grade S235JR. This is a common structural steel suitable for floor and platform applications, with good weldability.
The material meets the requirements for structural steel under EN 10025-2. The shape and spacing of the pattern follow the manufacturer’s mill standard, so we can confirm these when you enquire, based on the available stock. Every delivery includes a mill test certificate.
Dimensions we supply
We do not cut or shear chequer plates — we supply them in the dimensions received from the steel mill. We will check available thicknesses and sizes against the current stock.
Where tear-drop plates are used
Typically where safe movement across a surface is essential:
- floors in industrial buildings and workshops,
- stair treads and platforms,
- access ramps and gangways,
- ship decks and stairways,
- surfacing for access platforms and machine steps.
What we need for a quotation
Send us the grade, thickness, plate dimensions and quantity in pieces or tonnes. For tear-drop plate, specify the base plate thickness, excluding the height of the pattern.
If you are unsure which to choose, tell us what you make from the sheet and how you will process it further. We will recommend material that suits both your production and your budget.
Transport and packaging
We prepare material for road or rail transport: our site has its own siding and lorry access. We deliver across Slovakia and to neighbouring countries.
On request, we wrap sheets in anti-corrosion VCI film, which protects the material during storage and transport without oil or wax.
